Visitors
will be treated to two new shows at Bogan Gallery on the
Island beginning October 8th and running through November 20th. Come
for Patrons Preview evening, Friday, October 8th, from 6 - 9pm, or come to
the ArtWalk and Artist Reception on Saturday, October
9th, from 6 - 9pm.
Terry
Hagiwara has his first show in Galveston, aptly titled, "Simply Raku." Regular visitors will have seen examples
of Hagiwara's ceramics before, but this show introduces modern patterns
never before seen in any gallery. Terry Hagiwara is a well-known
ceramicist who combines his Japanese aesthetic in design with his love for
the shapes in Native American pottery. He imposes order on seemingly randon and chaotic patterns, meticulously applying the
glazes by hand. The low firing process of Raku
is the focus of this show, allowing for variety in appearance on the
surface of each vessel; some appear ancient, while others, with their
metallic glazes, look decidedly modern. Hagiwara's vessels are
affordable, attractive, and collectible.
In addition,
Bogan Gallery is proud to be a part of the D'Feet
Breast Cancer Organization's celebration of it's 10th year anniversary.
The "Uplifting Ideas" exhibit, running concurrently with
Hagiwara's show, is the result of a contest held in which artists, crafters,
and quilters decorated over 40 bras. Visitors to the
gallery are encouraged to vote for the bra they like the best. The
designers of the 5 winning bras will receive prize money, and the 5 winning bras
will be auctioned off for charity at an event in 2011. This is a fun
event for a worthy charity, so come to the gallery and cast your vote!
