Ceramic Artist

About himself (or Artist's statement):

"Let my pieces speak to you."

Yet, for some Art Historians who want to know the background information of the artist, here is my mumbling below:

Finds beauty in anything almost symmetric (or organized) but with its symmetry slightly broken (or with a hint of chaos). Appreciates controled behaviour of free and spontaneous fluidity.

Born in Japan, some time ago. Came to Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y. in '69, and to Houston in '81 from Boston. Began taking ceramic classes from Bill Dennard at Glassel in '89. Had never played with mud-water-and-fire combination before, even when growing up in Kyushu, Japan. Kyushu (the third largest island in Japan, southwest of Honshu main island) is famous for many ceramic sites such as Arita, Imari, Nabeshima, Karatsu, Takatori, Agano, etc.

Enjoys his day-time job, research physicist in petroleum industry. Other indulgences are: food. Yes, everything on his dinner table is made by himself. bowls, plates, ..., of course, dinner, too, except glassware and silverware. and, arts, music, play, tennis, walk/hike, travel, .... (OperArTenniSushi).

Works with high-fire stonewares, but more often with raku firing. With raku firing, uses glazes, whether metalic copper or crakle white, in simple geometric patterns. Or, instead using any glaze, burnishes, applies smoke-resist slip, then removes the slip after raku-firing/smoking. (calles himself the process as "jade finish"). The pieces shown at the Goldesberry Gallery of Houston, at present are made this way.
